Meshuggah a aThe Absymal Eyea

Long-running Swedish titans Meshuggah are among the most influential metal bands on the planet. Over more than 30 years, Meshuggah have pioneered the kind of complex-but-ferocious tech-metal that’s come to dominate certain corners of the extreme-music underground. They’ve never fallen off, either, and they’ve only grown more popular as time has gone on. But Meshuggah haven’t released anything since their 2016 album The Violent Sleep Of Reason, an LP that earned them a far-fetched Grammy nomination. So it’s a big deal that Meshuggah are about to come back with a new album.

Earlier this week, house music masters Disclosure and Zedd announced they were teaming up for a collab called “You’ve Got To Let Go If You Want To Be Free.” This marks the first time they’ve worked together in the studio, which they teased pictures of back in October. I know Zedd’s probably been waiting for this moment for years — back in 2018, the super producer voiced his admiration of Disclosure’s “Ultimatum” on Twitter, writing, “Can we pls talk about how amazing this new @disclosure song is???” Sure enough, it’s first in line for the club. Listen to “You’ve Got To Let Go If You Want To Be Free” below.

Spotify Competitors Celebrate Neil Young, Artists Weigh In On Joe Rogan Controversy

Earlier this week, Neil Young asked that his music be pulled from Spotify, citing COVID-19 vaccine misinformation on the platform and telling Spotify to choose between him and controversial podcast host Joe Rogan. Spotify has acquiesced, and Young reasoned in one of his open letters: “Losing 60% of worldwide streaming income by leaving SPOTIFY is a very big deal, a costly move, but worth it for our integrity and beliefs.” Now, as #BoycottSpotify is trending, the service’s competitors — like Apple Music, Tidal, and SiriusXM — are capitalizing on the shake-up.

Goon a aGarden Of Our Neighbora

The upcoming Paint By Numbers, Vol. 1 is the first of two EPs of songs that Becker compares to “sculptures or collages,” recorded entirely at Becker’s apartment and rehearsal space. Lead single and opening track “Garden Of Our Neighbor” is a warm, patient zone-out that eschews the fuzzy ’90s-indebted rock of Goon’s last LP in favor of lush bedroom-pop. Listen below.

Charli XCX a aBeg For Youa (Feat. Rina Sawayama)

Charli XCX has released “Beg For You,” the third single from her upcoming new album Crash following last year’s “Good Ones” and “New Shapes.” “Beg For You” features Rina Sawayama, who has a new album of her own expected out later this year, and it samples the mid-’00s dance hit “Cry For You” by September, a moniker of the Swedish pop musician Petra Marklund.

Kanye West Announces First Release Date For Donda 2, Executive Produced By Future

Look. Kanye West is not going to release a new album on Feb. 22. We all know this. The very fact that he has told us he will release a new album on that date is a virtual guarantee that an album will not materialize on that date. Maybe he will debut a rough draft of an album at some ultra-exclusive event and livestream it on a massive corporate platform. But a new Kanye album? On the day Kanye says a new album will be out? No. Nope. Not happening.

Stream UK Hardcore Band Final Formas Awesomely Thrashy New Demo

In recent years, the whole UK hardcore scene has been going through an exciting new wave. Many of the best bands going these days — Higher Power, Chubby And The Gang, the Chisel, Big Cheese — come from the same loose community of musicians, and a lot of those musicians spent time in the formative bands Arms Race and Violent Reaction. But UK hardcore is a diverse thing, and plenty of great bands don’t include any of those people or sound anything like those bands. Case in point: Final Form.

Ahead of those gigs at Magazine London, they’ve shared their second official single today.

Hear Wednesday Cover Gary Stewart, Roger Miller, & Drive-By Truckers

Ducks Ltd. a aSheets Of Greya

Last year, Ducks Ltd., the Toronto jangle-pop duo formerly known as Ducks Unlimited, released their debut album Modern Fiction. It’s an impressive LP, but there’s at least one strong Ducks Ltd. track that didn’t make the cut. The band wrote the twitchy, driving “Sheets Of Grey” years ago, and it’s a live favorite for them, but they didn’t think it made sense on Modern Fiction. Instead, Ducks Ltd. have released the song as a standalone single today.

Dashboard Confessional, Underoath, New Found Glory, Thursday, & More Are Playing An Emo Cruise

In the past few weeks, the emo-nostalgia feeding frenzy has gone into overdrive. It’s one thing to have a festival like Alabama’s Furnace Fest, which at least seems loosely tied into the idea of emo as an underground music genre with connections to hardcore and to DIY in general. But now we’re looking at massive merchandising efforts like the When We Were Young festival, a corporate affair that explicitly promotes itself as a trip back through time. Also, this fall, aging emo fans with money to blow will have another opportunity to relive their glory days, except this time they’ll get to do it while surrounded by water.

Born To Die Turns 10

“There’s backlash about everything I do. It’s nothing new.” That’s Lana Del Rey talking about her instantly infamous Saturday Night Live performance only a couple weeks after it happened. That she was already so jaded following a scant few months in the public eye speaks to the amount of vitriol that Del Rey garnered leading up to her major-label debut album, Born To Die, released 10 years ago today. There’s no moment during that SNL performance where it looks like Del Rey thinks that her career might be on the verge of being over. Since the very beginning, she has always played defense. Even a decade later, she is still addressing that one performance. “It wasn’t terrible,” she told Elton John in 2019, and in a tragic twist straight out of a Lana Del Rey song: “It was the one night in all my time performing that I wasn’t nervous.”

Glam Metal Band Wig Wam Were Dropped By Booking Agency Three Days Before Career-Reviving Peacemaker Premiere

Earlier this month, HBO Max dropped James Gunn’s Peacemaker, a Suicide Squad spin-off series about the titular DC superhero starring John Cena in the lead role. Accompanying the show’s now-viral opening title sequence is a hair metal song called “Do Ya Really Wanna Taste It” by the Norwegian glam-metal band Wig Wam. Originally appearing on Wig Wam’s 2010 album Non Stop Rockan Roll, the TV placement has been something of a career hail Mary pass for Wig Wam, who recently told Billboard that they’d been dropped from their booking agency just days before Peacemaker debuted on HBO Max.

Spotify Removes Neil Young After Joe Rogan Vaccine Flap

Spotify has officially begun removing Neil Young’s music from its platform at his request after he asked the company to choose between him and controversial podcast host Joe Rogan, The New York Times reports. “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines — potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them,” Young wrote in a since-deleted open letter on his Neil Young Archives website. “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.”
